Set in Los Angeles, stand-up comedian Redd Foxx stars as a 65-year old junk collector, Fred Sanford. After losing his wife Elizabeth, Fred, joined by his son, Lamont, runs the family business in the backyard of his home. With Fred's unpredictable behavior, Lamont often threatens to leave the business forcing Fred into a convenient and questionable "heart attack."
Like oil and water, the two don't mix and often need a women's touch as Aunt Esther Anderson, the Bible-toting sister of Elizabeth, puts her foot down. While Fred's antics and plots to make money, are enhanced with the company of his good friends Grady Wilson, Melvin and Bubba Bexley, Lamont and his friends (Julio Fuentes, Ah Chew) are often helping to get Fred out of trouble.
